NAME: Belle (formerly called Lana @ the shelter)HONORARY BOUVIER RESCUE
BREED: Bouvier des Flandres
AGE: 1-2 yro.
ADOPTED: September 2002
This is the beautiful letter that we received from Belle’s new Mom:
**UPDATE:"For those of you who have gone through rescue before, Bless you for not giving up. When my Bouvier 'Precious' died suddenly I was left with an empty place in both my heart and my home. This was the first time that I had ever been without a dog and I was miserable. The problem was how to housebreak a puppy when you work all day. The simple solution seemed to be to rescue an adult Bouvier. This would solve my housebreaking dilemma and I would be offering a home to a dog that might not find one otherwise. Thus with good intentions and encouragement and suggestions from friends, I began my hunt for a companion. I quickly found out that there is a big difference in rescue organizations. Some of them put a restriction on geographical areas. Others make you go through a long interview and inspection process and then never do get back to you. Some follow-up on every reference that you give them while others don't contact anyone. There are breed specific rescues and then there are those who will help any homeless animal that they can. When I either couldn't find the right dog for me through breed rescues, either because they simply didn't have the dog I was looking for or because they put so many restrictions on the adoption process that it was impossible for me to get one of their dogs, I turned away from Breed Rescues and contacted the Humane Society where I found what looked to be a Bouvier on their website. The first obstacle that I encountered was that I could not adopt the dog without seeing her in person. I could understand that and I explained that It would be at least a six hour drive for me to come and see the dog, since I lived 2 states away, so I would like them to hold her for me. I was told that they could not do this for me. I asked if I would be able to take her with me the day that I adopted her, assuming that I was able to get there before someone else took her. I was told that she could not leave until she was spayed. I asked if they would spay her before I came to get her so that I would only have to make one 12 hour trip. I was told that they do not spay until the dog is adopted and they do not let you adopt until you see the dog in person. I offered to pay for the spaying whether or not I adopted her so that she could be ready to go when I got there and I would not have to make two 12 hour drives. Once again I was told no. I offered them the name of my Vet and said that I would take her there to have her spayed. They said no. At this point I asked how long they had had the dog. When I was told 30 days I began to get worried. The Humane Society is not a no kill organization and I had visions of a long drive ending in an announcement that the dog had been put down hours before I got there. When I asked if there was anyone with more authority that I could solicit help from I was told that the manager had gone home for the day and they would not contact her at home. I was then informed that the person with seniority on the premises was at that moment in the back euthanizing dogs and could not be interrupted. In a panic, wanting to make sure that the dog was not killed, I called the Second Chance Bouvier Rescue with the hope that they could get the dog I was interested in out of the Humane Society and into their facility. When they told me that this particular Humane Society would not work with them, I began to lose all hope of saving the companion that I had been searching for for three long months. The wonderful people at Second Chance Bouvier Rescue told me to go to the Humane Society, adopt the dog and they would pick her up after she had been spayed and get her to me. They didn't ask me for anything. They offered me the help that I had been searching for through all the other contacts and inquiries I had made in my quest to rescue a dog. I made the trip across two states on a Friday and walked in 45 minutes after another couple had been in to see the dog that I wanted. Fortunately for me, they had a wedding to go to the following day and didn't want to adopt the dog and then have to board her. I made sure that I took cash with me so that I would have no problems. Once the dog had been paid for, I was told that she would be spayed on Monday and I had to pick her up before 10:00 Tuesday morning. They were not at all happy when I said that I would not be coming back for my dog, that she would be picked up by someone from the Second Chance Bouvier Rescue. After some discussion, it was finally agreed that I could have anyone I wanted pick up my dog. Bright and early Tuesday morning a member of the Second Chance Bouvier Rescue picked up 'Belle' and brought her to me. He agreed with me that I had a Bouvier and not the terrier mix that she was listed as. He also said that she was starving. My vet also agreed that there was no way she could be so thin and have been fed three times a day which is what I was told. My vet was very concerned that the dog had undergone major surgery in her physical condition. During the first week that I had her she gained three pounds. I say none of this to discourage anyone from rescuing an animal in need. I simply want everyone to understand that it takes determination and patience to find a rescue organization that will work with you for the good of the animals. Second Chance Bouvier Rescue is one of the best that I have encountered. Their goal is to give less fortunate dogs an opportunity to find the loving homes that all of God's creatures deserve. As you can see from the pictures, Belle is doing just fine and I must admit is the best dog that I have ever had the good fortune to share my life with. So please don't give up the quest to rescue. Just pick your organizations carefully and support the ones that will work with you for the benefit of the animals. These groups survive because of donations from those of us who understand and appreciate their efforts to make this world a better place for the creatures that have been put in our care. These homeless animals did not ask to be abandoned, abused or neglected. They do know when they have been rescued and show their appreciation in the love that they give us in return every day that we spend with them. Thank you Second Chance Bouvier Rescue. With more organizations like yours maybe we can change the plight of the homeless dogs that deserve so much better than to be destroyed because society doesn't care." Jan Lathrup (Belle’s Mom)

Up to date on all vaccinations, Not cat-friendly.
**UPDATE: Bert & Ernie were adopted by a wonderful woman in Rockaway Beach, CO - they left for their new home on 10/10/02

NAME: Bertha My Bouvie
BREED: Bouvier des Flandres
GENDER: Female (spayed)
AGE: Possibly 10+
WEIGHT:
COLOR: Black , docked tail & cropped ears
RESCUED: From Genesee County Humane Society. She was dropped off at the shelter like yesterdays newspaper. The shelter workers did not think that a rescue would take her due to her age. They called us and we picked her up - not to adopt out as a rescue - but to let her live her life out at the farm. PERSONALITY: She is a sweet girl. Obedient, housetrained, just wants to be loved.
**UPDATE: Adopted by the Ousnamers' , who can always find room in their hearts and at the "inn" for another old timer to live out her days. She has made herself right to home, and sleeps up in their bedroom along with some of the other seniors that they have adopted and plan to love for whatever length of time they are blessed to have them.
**RECENT UPDATE: Here is a recent picture of Bertha "my Bouvie". As you can tell she has lost some weight and "cleans up" really well. She is just a real love.

NAME: Buster (II)
BREED: Bouvier des Flandres
GENDER: Male (neutered)
AGE: 2 1/4yro (born 1/00)
COLOR: Silver/gray brindle, docked and cropped
RESCUED FROM: 4/15/02 from Ingham County Animal Control, Mason MI
PERSONALITY: Buster was confiscated along with a bunch of other dogs from a fighting ring. Buster was used as the "bait" dog. We first learned of his plight in November of 2001 but could not rescue him until his court case was over. We had gone down to visit and evaluate him and signed the papers to rescue him from Ingham County last November. Today was his lucky day - we got to take him out of the cage that he has been in for over five months and immediately placed him in a 1/2 acre run. He thought he died and went to heaven! Considering his horrendous prior life and his loneliness and despair waiting for his court case to be over, he is actually a really wonderful dog. He was full of "doggie kisses" and was just so glad to be shown affection. I am sure he is going to be beautiful once he is bathed and groomed. Up to date on all vaccinations
**UPDATE: Buster was adopted 5/5/02 by a very caring and experienced Bouv rescue family in Derby, CT. This family had adopted three Bouv rescues previously and had always asked for the dogs that would need the most work and would be the hardest to place. Buster joined his new Bouv sister, Mariah, and JRT brother Devin - and of course his new Mom and Dad. They will have their work cut out for them with Buster - but we are confident he will come around just as the other three have in the past.

GENDER: Male (neutered)
AGE: 1 to 1 1/2 yro
WEIGHT: 24.7#
COLOR: Tri-Color
RESCUED FROM: Arenac County Animal Control.
PERSONALITY: There once were three brothers: Larry, Moe & Curly (appropriately named because of their hilarious antics). Curly seems to have the most bassett and hunting instinct of the three and therefore, the last to be placed. He is neutered, vaccinated, and was given the Proheart 6 heartworm shot. He is gentle, sensitive, affectionate, always friendly with children, dogs and cats, never aggressive. He is a comic and enjoys playing with toys. He loves the outdoors and has a bit of a stubborn streak when he catches a scent. He is never destructive in a home and will tolerate crating - but prefers to not be alone in a small cage. Curly is housebroken and trustworthy, once used to a routine and schedule. We are boarding Curly at our kennel for Grosse Pte Animal Adoption Society (GPAAS) and offered to put him on our website to help find him a home. If you are interested, you can either fill out one of our on line adoption applications or contact: Corinne Martin (GPAAS) (313) 884-1551 cmartingp@ameritech.net for more info Up to date on all vaccinations.

GENDER: Male (to be neutered)
AGE: 18 months
WEIGHT: 61.4#
COLOR: Gray brindle, docked and cropped
RESCUED: by Maureen Varvir and surrendered to us 6/22/02. He was one of the worst case scenarios she had ever come across. He was covered in cow/horse manure as well as his own feces. Couldn't tell his sex or that he was docked and cropped prior to removing his "pelt/dreadlocks". He was a stray.
PERSONALITY: He never once complained about the clipping, prodding and poking. He was scared out of his mind, but handled it like a trooper. He is "smallish" about 24". We (and Festus) cannot ever thank Maureen enough for the fantastic job she did trimming him. His feces caked hair was almost petrified right to his skin. Amazingly he tested heartworm negative (the mosquitos would have had to have 18" extensions to penetrate his skin). He is a little "skittish", but full of love. Would not recommend adoption to home with small children or small animals. Not cat friendly. Up to date on all vaccinations.
**UPDATE: Festus was adopted 8/10/02 by a wonderful family in Shelby Twp, MI.

NAME: Juneau
BREED: Bouvier des Flandres
GENDER: Male (neutered)
AGE: 2 yro
WEIGHT:
COLOR: Light gray brindle, natural ears and docked tail
RESCUED FROM: Anchorage Alaska SPCA confiscated Juneau along with dozens of other animals from a collector in Sterling AK. He was flown into Metro Airport from Alaska in December along with Tundra (listed below). He was mentally and physically abused, deprived of food, water, exercise, affection and medical attention from his previous owner. But he faired better than dozens of his buddies that were found frozen to death on the end of a short chain with no food or water in sight. Because of his deplorably inhumane living conditions we are currently having an animal behavioralist work with him. He does get along fine with people and children but under the circumstances would only consider adopting him to family with NO other pets. He will not be available for adoption for a few months - but we are taking applications from interested parties.
PERSONALITY: Up to date on all vaccinations, Not cat-friendly.
**UPDATE: Adopted 6/15/02 for fantastic woman in Toledo, OH that had previously adopted a rescue from MaryAnn Harvey that came with a lot of baggage. We are all sure that this woman can make a real difference in Juneau's "new life". It is amazing what a little love, compassion and understanding can do.
**MOST RECENT UPDATE: The top pictures are the ones taken the day Juneau arrived from Anchorage AK (not a happy camper :-( Bottom pictures were taken after six months of love, attention, being fed and watered and being allowed to just "chill out" at his own pace. He has done a complete 360 with regard to his attitude, behavior and disposition. Isn't it amazing how much these "babies" can endure and still bounce back with love in their hearts. Juneau is now available for adoption to a very Bouvier saavy owner only. He is not housebroken and still needs to be taught some manners - but otherwise he is looking for the right person to share the love he was deprived of giving and receiving in his earlier days.

**UPDATE: Adopted 2/2/02 by one of the most animal loving families we have ever met in Holgate, OH. Titan met his new brothers and sisters (also rescues): 7 St Bernards and 2 Aussies and everyone is getting along just great. It takes a very special person to want to make room in their already crowded home for another rescue - and we are delighted for everyone, two and four legged. This family makes room in their heart and home for the dogs that people don't give a chance for happiness.

MOST RECENT UPDATE: Titan "Sponge Pants" with rescue brothers and sisters. I ask you - who is the odd man out? Have you ever seen such a crew? Titan is getting along fantastic in his new family. If this doesn't put a smile on your face, I don't know what will.
